FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this class intended for?

This BPI Building Analyst Technician course is ideal for HVAC technicians, general contractors, home inspectors, home builders, and electricians.

Specifically, BA-T candidates must already have earned their BPI Building Science Principles certificate. This course builds on that knowledge and teaches you how to perform diagnostic tests and collect data.

Are there any prerequisites?

Yes, you must pass the BPI Building Science Principles exam before you can become a BPI Building Analyst Technician.

Is the BPI BA-T exam included with this course?

Yes! We administer and proctor the BA-T field exam in both our online and blended packages.

Should I register for the online course or blended?

This decision is entirely up to you. Some items to consider:

  • Both formats start with self-paced online training.
  • With the online format, you'll be able to schedule the exact day/time that you want to do your remotely proctored exam.
  • With the online format, you will need to have access to energy auditing equipment.
  • With the blended format, you will use our equipment when you show up in person at our scheduled event.
  • With the blended format, you'll get a whole day to practice using the equipment prior to taking your field exam.

What energy auditing equipment will I need?

If you register for our blended format, we will provide all equipment for the training and testing. If you register for the online (self-paced) format, you will need to buy, borrow, or rent the following equipment:

  • Combustible Gas Detector (Gas Sniffer) that provides a digital display of percentage of Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) and/or provide an alarm when detecting combustible gas concentrations exceeding 10% Lower Explosive Limit (LEL)
  • Combustion Analyzer equipped internally or externally with a nitric oxide filter (NOx filter)
  • Ambient CO monitor
  • Mirror, smoke pencils or other smoke visualization equipment for depressurization and spillage assessment
  • Complete Blower Door Testing Kit including hoses, blower door frame, blower door canvas, etc.
  • One or more manometers
  • Pressure Pan and associated kit
  • Exhaust Fan Flow Meter and associated kit
  • Duct Blaster and associated kit
  • Infrared camera (optional)

When you register for this course, you will automatically receive energy auditing equipment discounts from leading equipment manufacturers, such as Retrotec and TruTech Tools.

What are the requirements for the field testing site?

If you register for our blended format, we will provide the site for the field training and testing. If you register for the online (self-paced) format, you must find a home that meets these requirements:

  • Must have at least one atmospherically vented combustion appliance
  • A ducted distribution system (must contain ductwork)
  • Exhaust fan
  • Gas Oven or an Electric oven for simulation purposes
  • Accessible attic

How do I begin the online training?

After you enroll, you will receive an automated email from the Everblue system with your unique username and password to Everblue’s secure online learning portal.

How soon after taking my exam am I certified?

We are required to submit your field exam score to BPI within 24 hours. BPI will ultimately determine whether or not you passed the field exam and will share your certification status in their online candidate portal. BPI will mail out a paper certificate and ID card, within 4-6 weeks after certification is awarded. However, you may begin work functions immediately after you confirm your certification status online.

Is the BPI Building Analyst Technician training approved for BPI CEUs?

Yes! The blended format is approved for 7.5 BPI CEUs, and the online (self-paced) format is approved for 4.5 BPI CEUs. We include information in the course on how to request and submit these hours to BPI.
